How to Choose What to Learn

Relevance: Will this actually improve our current projects or clients’ results?
Problem-solving: Does it fix a real pain point, or is it just different for the sake of being different?
Community and longevity: Tools that last have people who care behind them.

The Hype Trap

Chasing hype feels productive —you’re “learning,” after all. But it can become a form of procrastination.

The more you jump from tool to tool, the less depth you gain in any of them.

Take Remix, for example. When it launched in 2021, it was celebrated as the next evolution of React —a smarter, faster alternative to Next.js. The community buzzed, Shopify acquired it, and it seemed like the future was written.

But just a couple of years later, Next.js 13 introduced similar features, and the hype quietly faded. Remix didn’t fail —it simply got absorbed by the ecosystem it was trying to disrupt.

Frameworks come and go. Solid fundamentals stay.

And sometimes, it’s not just frameworks —even the tiniest dependencies can get caught in the hype. Remember when half the internet installed left-pad just to add spaces to strings, or when people used is-odd instead of writing n % 2 !== 0? It’s a funny reminder that simplicity often beats chasing every new tool.

Focus on the Fundamentals

Master those, and you’ll always be able to adapt —no matter what the next “Next.js killer” promises.
