Every week, there’s a shiny new framework, library, or tool promising to change everything. It’s exciting and exhausting. You scroll through dev news or Twitter, and suddenly it feels like you’re already behind.
So, how do you decide what’s worth your time and what’s better left to fade quietly away?
The Reality of Framework Overload
Developers talk a lot about FOMO, the fear of missing out but in tech, it hits differently. You start thinking: “If I don’t learn this new thing, am I falling behind?”
That mindset can turn learning (something we actually love) into a source of anxiety. The truth? You’ll never learn it all and you don’t have to. The real skill today is knowing what not to chase.
How to Choose What to Learn
At LABBA, we’ve found a few simple filters that help us stay grounded:
- Relevance: Will this actually improve our current projects or clients’ results?
- Problem-solving: Does it fix a real pain point, or is it just different for the sake of being different?
- Community and longevity: Tools that last have people who care behind them.
If something checks those boxes, it’s worth exploring. If not, let it scroll by.
The Hype Trap
Chasing hype feels productive you’re “learning,” after all. But it can become a form of procrastination.
The more you jump from tool to tool, the less depth you gain in any of them.
Take Remix, for example. When it launched in 2021, it was celebrated as the next evolution of React a smarter, faster alternative to Next.js. The community buzzed, Shopify acquired it, and it seemed like the future was written.
But just a couple of years later, Next.js 13 introduced similar features, and the hype quietly faded. Remix didn’t fail, it simply got absorbed by the ecosystem it was trying to disrupt.
Frameworks come and go. Solid fundamentals stay.
And sometimes, it’s not just frameworks even the tiniest dependencies can get caught in the hype. Remember when half the internet installed left-pad just to add spaces to strings, or when people used is-odd instead of writing n % 2 !== 0? It’s a funny reminder that simplicity often beats chasing every new tool.
Focus on the Fundamentals
Trends evolve, but the building blocks don’t.
JavaScript, HTML, CSS. Design patterns. Architecture. Empathy for the user.
Master those, and you’ll always be able to adapt no matter what the next “Next.js killer” promises.
Beyond the Hype
The goal isn’t to know every framework it’s to build things that matter.
At LABBA, we believe progress isn’t about chasing what’s new; it’s about choosing what’s right.
Less fear. More focus. Better work.
